You could create separate reports or comparative charts. You could add filters in the Filters pane. Or you could use&nbsp;<em>slicers<\/em>. Slicers are another way of filtering. They narrow the portion of the dataset that is shown in the other report visualizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/slicer2.gif\" alt=\"Animation of Slicer in action.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This article walks through creating and formatting a basic slicer, using the free&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/create-reports\/sample-retail-analysis\">Retail Analysis Sample<\/a>. It also covers controlling which visuals are affected by a slicer, syncing with slicers on other pages, and filtering and formatting slicers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These other articles explain how to make specific types of slicers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/create-reports\/desktop-slicer-numeric-range\">Numeric range slicers<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/desktop-slicer-filter-date-range\">Relative date slicers<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/create-reports\/slicer-filter-relative-time\">Relative time slicers<\/a>.<\/li><li>Responsive,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/create-reports\/power-bi-slicer-filter-responsive\">resizable slicers<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/create-reports\/power-bi-slicer-hierarchy-multiple-fields\">Hierarchy slicers<\/a>&nbsp;with multiple fields.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-to-use-a-slicer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#when-to-use-a-slicer\"><\/a>When to use a slicer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Slicers are a great choice when you want to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Display commonly used or important filters on the report canvas for easier access.<\/li><li>Make it easier to see the current filtered state without having to open a drop-down list.<\/li><li>Filter by columns that are unneeded and hidden in the data tables.<\/li><li>Create more focused reports by putting slicers next to important visuals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Power BI slicers don&#8217;t support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Input fields<\/li><li>Drill-down options<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"create-a-slicer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#create-a-slicer\"><\/a>Create a slicer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This slicer filters data by district manager. If you want to follow along with this procedure, download the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/download.microsoft.com\/download\/9\/6\/D\/96DDC2FF-2568-491D-AAFA-AFDD6F763AE3\/Retail%20Analysis%20Sample%20PBIX.pbix\">Retail Analysis Sample PBIX file<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Open Power BI Desktop, and from the menu bar, select&nbsp;<strong>File<\/strong>&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;<strong>Open report<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Browse to the&nbsp;<strong>Retail Analysis Sample PBIX.pbix<\/strong>&nbsp;file, then select&nbsp;<strong>Open<\/strong>.<\/li><li>On the left pane, select the&nbsp;<strong>Report<\/strong>&nbsp;icon&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-kpi\/power-bi-report-view.png\">&nbsp;to open the file in report view.<\/li><li>On the&nbsp;<strong>Overview<\/strong>&nbsp;page, with nothing selected on the report canvas, select the&nbsp;<strong>Slicer<\/strong>&nbsp;icon&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/slicer-icon.png\">&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<strong>Visualizations<\/strong>&nbsp;pane to create a new slicer.<\/li><li>With the new slicer selected, from the&nbsp;<strong>Fields<\/strong>&nbsp;pane, expand the&nbsp;<strong>District<\/strong>&nbsp;table and select&nbsp;<strong>DM<\/strong>&nbsp;to populate the slicer.The new slicer is now populated with a list of district manager names and their selection boxes.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/power-bi-new-slicer.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Slicer populated with district manager names.\"><\/li><li>Resize and drag the elements on the canvas to make room for the slicer. If you resize the slicer too small, its items are cut off.<\/li><li>Select names on the slicer and notice the effects on the other visualizations on the page. Select names again to deselect them, or hold down the&nbsp;<strong>Ctrl<\/strong>&nbsp;key to select more than one name. Selecting all names has the same effect as selecting none.<\/li><li>Alternately, select&nbsp;<strong>Format<\/strong>&nbsp;(paint roller icon) in the&nbsp;<strong>Visualizations<\/strong>&nbsp;pane to format your slicer.There are too many options to describe them all here; experiment and create a slicer that works for you. In the following image, the first slicer has a horizontal orientation and colored backgrounds for the items. To reverse the sort order to descending, select the ellipsis (<strong>&#8230;<\/strong>) in the top right corner of the slicer and choose&nbsp;<strong>Sort descending<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"control-which-page-visuals-are-affected-by-slicers\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#control-which-page-visuals-are-affected-by-slicers\"><\/a>Control which page visuals are affected by slicers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, slicers on report pages affect all the other visualizations on that page, including each other. As you choose values in the list and date slicers that you just created, notice the effects on the other visualizations. The filtered data is an intersection of the values selected in both slicers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use visual interactions to exclude some page visualizations from being affected by others. On the&nbsp;<strong>Overview<\/strong>&nbsp;page, the&nbsp;<strong>Total Sales Variance by FiscalMonth and District Manager<\/strong>&nbsp;chart shows overall comparative data for district managers by month, which is information that you want to keep visible. Use visual interactions to keep slicer selections from filtering this chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Go to the&nbsp;<strong>Overview<\/strong>&nbsp;page of the report, and then select the&nbsp;<strong>DM<\/strong>&nbsp;slicer you previously created.<\/li><li>On the Power BI Desktop menu, select the&nbsp;<strong>Format<\/strong>&nbsp;menu under&nbsp;<strong>Visual Tools<\/strong>, and then select&nbsp;<strong>Edit interactions<\/strong>.Filter controls,&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/filter-controls.png\">&nbsp;each with a&nbsp;<strong>Filter<\/strong>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<strong>None<\/strong>&nbsp;option, appear above all the visuals on the page. Initially, the&nbsp;<strong>Filter<\/strong>&nbsp;option is preselected on all the controls.<\/li><li>Select the&nbsp;<strong>None<\/strong>&nbsp;option in the filter control above the&nbsp;<strong>Total Sales Variance by FiscalMonth and District Manager<\/strong>&nbsp;chart to stop the&nbsp;<strong>DM<\/strong>&nbsp;slicer from filtering it.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information about editing interactions, see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/create-reports\/service-reports-visual-interactions\">Change how visuals interact in a Power BI report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sync-and-use-slicers-on-other-pages\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#sync-and-use-slicers-on-other-pages\"><\/a>Sync and use slicers on other pages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can sync a slicer and use it on any or all pages in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the current report, the&nbsp;<strong>District Monthly Sales<\/strong>&nbsp;page has a&nbsp;<strong>District Manager<\/strong>&nbsp;slicer, but what if we also wanted that slicer on the&nbsp;<strong>New Stores<\/strong>&nbsp;page? The&nbsp;<strong>New Stores<\/strong>&nbsp;page has a slicer, but it provides only&nbsp;<strong>Store Name<\/strong>&nbsp;information. On the&nbsp;<strong>District Monthly Sales<\/strong>&nbsp;page, notice that the&nbsp;<strong>District Manager<\/strong>&nbsp;slicer now shows the same selections as on the&nbsp;<strong>Overview<\/strong>&nbsp;page. On the&nbsp;<strong>New Stores<\/strong>&nbsp;page, the&nbsp;<strong>District Manager<\/strong>&nbsp;slicer is now visible and it selections affect the selections that are visible in the&nbsp;<strong>Store Name<\/strong>&nbsp;slicer.&nbsp;TipAlthough the slicer initially appears on the synced pages at the same size and position as on the original page, you can move, resize, and format synced slicers on the various pages independently.&nbsp;NoteIf you sync a slicer to a page but don&#8217;t make it visible on that page, slicer selections made on the other pages still filter the data on the page.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sync-separate-slicers\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#sync-separate-slicers\"><\/a>Sync separate slicers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also sync two or more separate slicers. This is particularly useful when working with composite models, as you might want to make the same selection across sources without relying on cross-source group relationships. To sync two or more separate slicers, you mark them as being part of a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure the&nbsp;<strong>Sync slicers<\/strong>&nbsp;pane is visible by selecting it from the&nbsp;<strong>View<\/strong>&nbsp;menu.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/power-bi-slicer-sync-pane.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Sync slicers pane.\"><\/li><li>Select one of the slicers that you want in the group. In the&nbsp;<strong>Sync slicers<\/strong>&nbsp;pane, expand&nbsp;<strong>Advanced options<\/strong>, and enter a name for the group. You can name it anything you want.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/power-bi-slicer-advanced-group.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of entering a group name in the Advanced section of the Sync slicers pane.\"><\/li><li>Then select another slicer you want to sync with the first, and enter the same name in the&nbsp;<strong>group name<\/strong>&nbsp;box. Be sure to enter it exactly the same.<\/li><li>Make sure to select either&nbsp;<strong>Sync field changes to other slicers<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Sync filter changes to other slicers<\/strong>&nbsp;or both depending on your scenario.<ul><li>If you just want to keep the slicers in sync so filters set by the slicers are kept in sync, select&nbsp;<strong>Sync filter changes to other slicers<\/strong>.<\/li><li>If you also want to make sure that any changes you make to the field on which the slicers are based get synced across the group, select&nbsp;<strong>Sync field changes to other slicers<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Test that the sync works the way you want by changing the selection in one of the slicers. Observe that it gets updated in the other slicer in the group.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"filtering-slicers\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#filtering-slicers\"><\/a>Filtering slicers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can apply visual-level filters to slicers to reduce the list of values that are displayed in the slicer. For example you might filter out blank values from a list slicer, or filter out certain dates from a range slicer. When you do this it only affects&nbsp;<em>the values that are shown in the slicer<\/em>, not&nbsp;<em>the filter that the slicer applies to other visuals<\/em>&nbsp;when you make a selection. For example, let&#8217;s say you apply a filter to a range slicer to only show certain dates. The selection on the slicer will only show the first and last dates from that range, but you would still see other dates in your other visuals. Once you change the selected range in the slicer, you&#8217;ll see the other visuals update. Clearing the slicer would show all the dates again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on visual-level filters, see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/create-reports\/power-bi-report-filter-types\">Filter types<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"format-slicers\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#format-slicers\"><\/a>Format slicers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Different formatting options are available, depending on the slicer type. By using&nbsp;<strong>Horizontal<\/strong>&nbsp;orientation,&nbsp;<strong>Responsive<\/strong>&nbsp;layout, and&nbsp;<strong>Item<\/strong>&nbsp;coloring, you can produce buttons or tiles rather than standard list items, and make slicer items resize to fit different screen sizes and layouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>With the&nbsp;<strong>District Manager<\/strong>&nbsp;slicer selected on any page, in the&nbsp;<strong>Visualizations<\/strong>&nbsp;pane, select the&nbsp;<strong>Format<\/strong>&nbsp;icon&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/power-bi-paintroller.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Format icon.\">&nbsp;to display the formatting controls.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/3-format.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Format selection.\"><\/li><li>Select the drop-down arrows next to each category to display and edit the options.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"general-options\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#general-options\"><\/a>General options<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Under&nbsp;<strong>Format<\/strong>, select&nbsp;<strong>General<\/strong>, select a red color under&nbsp;<strong>Outline color<\/strong>, and then change&nbsp;<strong>Outline weight<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>2<\/em>.This setting changes the color and thickness of the header and item outlines and underlines.<\/li><li>For&nbsp;<strong>Orientation<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Vertical<\/strong>&nbsp;is selected by default. Select&nbsp;<strong>Horizontal<\/strong>&nbsp;to produce a slicer with horizontally arranged tiles or buttons, and scroll arrows to access items that don&#8217;t fit in the slicer.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/4-horizontal.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of General selections.\"><\/li><li>Turn&nbsp;<strong>On<\/strong>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<strong>Responsive<\/strong>&nbsp;layout to change the size and arrangement of slicer items according to the view screen and slicer size.For list slicers, responsive layout prevents items from being cut off on small screens. It&#8217;s available only in horizontal orientations. For range slider slicers, responsive formatting changes the style of the slider and provides more flexible resizing. Both types of slicers become filter icons at small sizes.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/5-responsive.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Set responsive layout.\">&nbsp;NoteResponsive layout changes can override specific heading and item formatting that you set.<\/li><li>Under&nbsp;<strong>X Position<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Y Position<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Width<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>Height<\/strong>, set the slicer position and size with numeric precision, or move and resize the slicer directly on the canvas.Experiment with different item sizes and arrangements, and note how the responsive formatting changes accordingly. These options are available only when you select horizontal orientations.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/media\/power-bi-visualization-slicers\/6-buttons.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Horizontal options.\"><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information about horizontal orientations and responsive layouts, see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/create-reports\/power-bi-slicer-filter-responsive\">Create a responsive slicer you can resize in Power BI<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"selection-controls-options-list-slicers-only\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/visuals\/power-bi-visualization-slicers#selection-controls-options-list-slicers-only\"><\/a>Selection controls options (list slicers only)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Under&nbsp;<strong>Selection controls<\/strong>, turn&nbsp;<strong>Show &#8220;Select all&#8221; option<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>On<\/strong>&nbsp;to add a&nbsp;<strong>Select all<\/strong>&nbsp;item to the slicer.<strong>Show &#8220;Select all&#8221; option<\/strong>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<strong>Off<\/strong>&nbsp;by default. When enabled, this option, when toggled, selects or deselects all items.
