Or press Command-Control-Esc (Escape).<\/li><li>Use the thumbnail to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-ca\/HT208721#thumbnail\">trim, share, save, or take other actions<\/a>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"portion\">Record a selected portion of the screen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Click&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/macos\/macos-mojave-screenshot-menu-selection-record-inline-icon.png\" width=\"28\" alt=\"the Record Selected Portion button\">&nbsp;in the onscreen controls.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Drag to select an area of the screen to record.&nbsp;To move the entire selection,&nbsp;drag from within the selection.<\/li><li>To start recording, click Record in the onscreen controls.<\/li><li>To stop recording, click&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/macos\/macos-mojave-screenshot-stop-recording-inline-icon.png\" width=\"22\" alt=\"the Stop Recording button\">&nbsp;in the menu bar. Or press Command-Control-Esc (Escape).<\/li><li>Use the thumbnail to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-ca\/HT208721#thumbnail\">trim, share, save, or take other actions<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"thumbnail\">Trim, share, and save<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After you stop recording,&nbsp;a thumbnail of the video appears briefly in the lower-right corner of your screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/macos\/Big-Sur\/macos-big-sur-screenshot-thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Take no action or swipe the thumbnail to the right and the recording is automatically saved.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Click the thumbnail to open the recording. You can then click&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/macos\/macos-mojave-screenshot-trim-recording-inline-icon.png\" width=\"26\" alt=\"the Trim button\">&nbsp;to trim the recording, or click&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/macos\/macos-high-sierra-preview-share-inline-icon.png\" width=\"16\" alt=\"the Share button\">&nbsp;to share it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Drag the thumbnail to move the recording to another location, such as to a document, an email, a Finder window, or the Trash.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Control-click the thumbnail for more options. For example, you can change the save location, open the recording in an app, or delete the recording without saving it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change the settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Click Options in the onscreen controls to change these settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Save to:<\/em>&nbsp;Choose where your recordings are automatically saved, such as Desktop, Documents, or Clipboard.<\/li><li><em>Timer:<\/em>&nbsp;Choose when to begin recording: immediately, 5 seconds, or 10 seconds after you click to record.<\/li><li><em>Microphone:<\/em>&nbsp;To record your voice or other audio along with your recording, choose a microphone.<\/li><li><em>Show Floating Thumbnail:&nbsp;<\/em>Choose whether to show the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-ca\/HT208721#thumbnail\">thumbnail<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><li><em>Remember Last Selection:<\/em>&nbsp;Choose whether to default to the selections you made the last time you used this tool.<\/li><li><em>Show Mouse Clicks:<\/em>&nbsp;Choose whether to show a black circle around your pointer when you click in the recording.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/mac_apps\/itunes\/divider.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"quicktime\">Use QuickTime Player<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Open QuickTime Player from your Applications folder, then choose File > New Screen Recording from the menu bar. You will then see either the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-ca\/HT208721#mojave\">onscreen controls described above<\/a>\u00a0or the Screen Recording window described below.\u00a0<\/li><li>Before starting your recording, you can click the arrow next to\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"22\" alt=\"the Record button\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/il\/osx-yosemite-quicktime-record_icon.png\">\u00a0to change the recording settings:<br><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"388\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/macos\/macos-high-sierra-quicktime-screen-recording.png\"><ul><li>To record your voice or other audio with the screen recording, choose a microphone. To monitor that audio during recording, adjust the volume slider. If you get audio feedback, lower the volume or use headphones with a microphone.<\/li><li>To show a black circle around your pointer when you click, choose Show Mouse Clicks in Recording.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>To start recording, click\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"22\" alt=\"the Record button\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/il\/osx-yosemite-quicktime-record_icon.png\">\u00a0and\u00a0then take one of these actions:<ul><li>Click anywhere on the screen to begin recording the entire screen.<\/li><li>Or drag to select an area to record, then click Start Recording within that area.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>To stop recording, click\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"22\" alt=\"the Stop button\" src=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/library\/content\/dam\/edam\/applecare\/images\/en_US\/il\/osx-yosemite-quicktime-stop_icon.png\">\u00a0in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc (Escape).<\/li><li>After you stop recording, QuickTime Player automatically opens the recording.
