Activation helps verify that your copy of Windows is genuine and hasn\u2019t been used on more devices than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When installing Windows 10, the digital license associates itself with your device’s hardware. If you make significant hardware changes on your device, such as replacing your motherboard, Windows will no longer find a license that matches your device, and you\u2019ll need to reactivate Windows to get it up and running.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To activate Windows, you’ll need either a digital license or a product key. To find out which you need, see “What activation method do I use, product key or digital license?” Then, use the following info to help you successfully prepare for a hardware change and reactivate Windows 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prepare your Windows 10 device for a hardware change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

First, follow these steps to find out if Windows 10 is already activated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Select the Start<\/strong>  button, then select Settings<\/strong>  > Update & Security <\/strong> > Activation <\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re not activated, complete the activation process with the steps you see on the Activation page.\u00a0If you experience an error while activating, see\u00a0Get help with Windows activation errors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you’ve confirmed that Windows 10 is activated, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Link your Windows 10 digital license to your Microsoft account. Very Important!!!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Windows 10 (version 1607 or later), it is essential that you link your Microsoft account with the Windows 10 digital license on your device. Linking your Microsoft account with your digital license allows you to reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter whenever you make a significant hardware change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, you’ll need to find out if your Microsoft account (What is a Microsoft account?<\/a>) is linked to your Windows 10 digital license. To find out, select the\u00a0Start\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0button,\u00a0then select\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Update & Security\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0and then select\u00a0Activation\u00a0<\/strong>. The activation status message will tell you if your account is\u00a0linked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your Microsoft account is not linked to your digital license, follow these steps to Add an account<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Sign in as an administrator to add your Microsoft account. To confirm that you’re using an administrator account, select the\u00a0Start\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0button, then select\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Accounts\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>>\u00a0Your info\u00a0<\/strong>. Under your name, you\u2019ll see\u00a0Administrator<\/strong>. If you\u2019re not an administrator, see\u00a0Create a local user or administrator account<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>
  2. Confirm that the administrator account is also your Microsoft account by checking to see if an email address is displayed above\u00a0Administrator<\/strong>. If an email address is displayed, this is a Microsoft account. If not, you\u2019re logged in using a local account. If you don\u2019t yet have a Microsoft account, see\u00a0How to create a new Microsoft account<\/a>.<\/li>
  3. Once you\u00a0confirm\u00a0that you\u2019re an administrator and using your Microsoft account, go back to the\u00a0Activation<\/strong>\u00a0page, select\u00a0Add an account<\/strong>, enter your Microsoft account and password, then select\u00a0Sign in<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    After your Microsoft account has been added, the message on the\u00a0Activation<\/strong>\u00a0page will change\u00a0to\u00a0Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Confirm your Windows 10 edition.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Make sure that the edition, Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro, is the same before and after your hardware change. Your digital license and product key will reactivate only if the edition remains the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You can see your edition on the same Activation page where you checked your activation status. To see which edition you have, select the\u00a0Start <\/strong>button,\u00a0then select\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Update & Security\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Activation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Reactivate Windows 10 after a hardware change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    When you’re ready to reactivate, make sure that your device is connected to the internet and then follow the steps for either a digital license or product key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Run the Activation troubleshooter.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    You\u2019ll need to first add your Microsoft account and link your account to the digital license on your device. After linking your Microsoft account, run the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate Windows 10.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This troubleshooter will only be available if your copy of Windows 10 (version 1607 or later) isn\u2019t activated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To use the Activation troubleshooter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Sign in as an administrator. <\/li>
    2. Select the\u00a0Start\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0button, then select\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Update & Security\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Activation\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Troubleshoot\u00a0<\/strong>. The troubleshooter will show\u00a0Windows can\u2019t be activated on your device<\/strong>.<\/li>
    3. Select\u00a0I changed hardware on this device recently<\/strong>, then select\u00a0Next<\/strong>.<\/li>
    4. Enter your connected Microsoft account and password,\u00a0then select\u00a0Sign in<\/strong>. The troubleshooter will only work with the connected Microsoft account.<\/li>
    5. From the list of devices that are linked to your Microsoft account, select the check box next to\u00a0This is the device I\u2019m using right now.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>
    6. Select\u00a0Activate<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      If you don\u2019t see the device you\u2019re using in the list of results, make sure that you signed in using the same Microsoft account you associated with the Windows 10 digital license on your device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
